ProFrame is developed using Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9 and is currently compatible with Windows 95,98, 2000, XP, Vista and the latest Microsoft 2008 Server family operating systems and the new Windows 7 operating system released in Oct 2009.

Microsoft Visual FoxPro's Future

The Microsoft Visual FoxPro Development Team posted this statement:

 "We have been asked about our plans for a new version of VFP. We are announcing today that there will be no VFP 10. VFP9 will continue to be supported according to our existing policy with support through 2015" 

To be exact on that support date, it's January 13th, 2015. In case you do not understand what that statement means; here it is. Microsoft has announced the slow death of Visual FoxPro, for over 20 years it has been one of the most powerful stand alone database application development tools in it's class. That class being products like MS Access, dBase and many others.

What Does this mean for the future of ProFrame and our current users?

The FoxPro version of ProFrame is a Win32 bit based application and will run on any Win32 or Win64 bit operating system (32 bit mode) including the latest OS from Microsoft (Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7) as is without any modifications.

The lifespan of the current FoxPro version of ProFrame will depend on the new generation of Windows operating systems after the latest Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 releases. That's not to say that the current FoxPro version of ProFrame will not run on any operating system after Windows 7 or Server 2008. At this point it's impossible to predict that. But I can tell you that ProFrame does have a bright future.

New Version (codename 2015)

Currently in development, a New Version of ProFrame (codename 2015) using the latest Visual Studio 2008 development tools with Visual Basic as the core language and SQL Server 2008 as the database. As I work more and more with Visual Studio, I'm finding that most of the features are very familiar. I'm also finding great development tools that was not available in Visual FoxPro. 

I'm very excited about this new project, it will give me the opportunity to re-design some current features as well as enhance what is already in place. Look for more information at http://proframe2015.livejournal.com for development updates, input and suggestions. At this point I do not have a release date, only in the near future.

The codename 2015 does have significant meaning.

  • It is a simple reminder that nothing last forever except Gods Word.
  • It corresponds with the ending date of Microsoft's support of VFP9.
  • It is the project target deadline for completion and deployment.
  • It's a reminder that new technology is beyond the past.
  • It's also a reminder that new things can be better.
